Buyer's Guide
How to choose the best computer speakers
What is the Purpose Of A Computer Speakers?
Computer speakers are devices which allow us to listen to music, watch movies, play games, etc., while using our computers. There are many different types of speakers available today, each designed for specific purposes. Some speakers are built into the monitor itself, others are attached to the computer case, and still others are connected directly to the motherboard via audio jacks. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending upon the situation.
Built Into Monitor
The most common form of speaker found in monitors is called "internal" speakers. Internal speakers are built right into the monitor casing. They are typically located near the front edge of the screen, although there are models where internal speakers are placed elsewhere. Most internal speakers are mono (one channel) units; however, dual-channel systems are becoming increasingly popular. Monitors with internal speakers are generally inexpensive, easy to install, and require no additional equipment. However, these speakers cannot be moved around within the monitor housing, nor can they be removed entirely. Additionally, they must be plugged into AC power sources, making them unsuitable for portable computing applications.
Attached To Case
Another option is attaching external speakers to the outside of the monitor. External speakers are commonly referred to as "surround sound," since they surround the entire viewing area of the monitor. Surround sound speakers are ideal for watching movies or listening to music, since they produce high quality sounds throughout the entire volume range. Unfortunately, they are very bulky and heavy, requiring extra room on top of the monitor. Because of their size and weight, they are rarely suitable for portable computing applications.
Connected Directly Via Audio Jacks
Finally, we have the third option, connecting speakers directly to the motherboard. This method requires special hardware, including audio connectors and cables. Since this type of connection bypasses the monitor altogether, it is considered to be the least desirable solution. Connections between the motherboard and speakers are prone to failure due to frequent plugging/unplugging, and the lack of proper shielding prevents the transmission of electromagnetic interference signals.
Types of Speakers Available Today
There are several different types of speakers available today. Here are some examples:
Bass Reflex - Bass reflex speakers reproduce low frequencies by bouncing sound waves off a large diaphragm inside the cabinet.
Dolby Digital - Dolby digital technology uses multiple channels to create a wide variety of effects.
The Importance of Purchasing Quality Speakers For Your Home Office
Computer speakers are essential components of any modern home office setup. Without good speakers, you cannot enjoy music while working. However, there are many different types of speakers available today. Some speakers are designed specifically for gaming systems, others are meant for multimedia applications, and still others are built to be used with computers.
In addition to being able to play audio files, computer speakers must also be capable of reproducing high fidelity sound. High fidelity refers to the ability of a speaker to reproduce sounds exactly as they were recorded. To accomplish this task, most speakers include digital signal processing (DSP) chips which allow the speaker to adjust its output based on the input signals. DSP technology has become increasingly popular due to the fact that it allows users to customize the sound produced by their speakers.
There are two main categories of speakers - active speakers and passive speakers. Active speakers require power supplies and amplifiers to operate. Passive speakers do not require external power sources. Most computer speakers are either active or passive.
Active speakers typically produce higher volume levels than passive speakers. Because of this, active speakers are generally preferred for use in large rooms where multiple listeners are present. Passive speakers are generally preferred for smaller spaces since they are easier to install and maintain.
Most computer speakers are powered via AC outlets. While this method is convenient, it does limit the number of locations where these speakers can be placed. Many consumers opt to run extension cords between their computer and the nearest wall outlet. This solution is both inconvenient and unsightly.
To avoid running extension cords, many consumers turn to wireless speakers. Wireless speakers eliminate the need for long cables and are easy to set up. Unfortunately, wireless speakers suffer from poor range. Consumers who wish to listen to music throughout their entire house must invest in additional receivers.
For those individuals who desire to hear music throughout their homes, wired speakers are the way to go. Wired speakers are connected directly to the computer using standard RCA jacks. Since these speakers plug into the computer, they can be moved anywhere within close proximity of the computer.
While traditional speakers are inexpensive, they lack the features necessary to create truly high fidelity sound. With the advent of DSP technology, computer speakers now incorporate advanced technologies which allow them to recreate the original recording faithfully.
Types of Speakers Available Today
Computer speakers are essential components of any modern computer setup. Without proper sound quality, your music files and videos will be hard to enjoy. However, there are many features to look for when purchasing a set of speakers. Here are some tips to ensure you get the right pair of speakers for your needs.
Sound Quality
The most obvious factor to consider when selecting speakers is the sound quality. Most computers today include built-in audio systems which produce high quality sounds. But if you plan on using external speakers, you must check whether these speakers match the quality of those included in your computer. Otherwise, you could end up listening to poor quality sounds.
Volume Control
Another thing to think about when shopping for speakers is volume control. Some speakers allow you to adjust the volume while others require you to connect additional devices such as headphones or amplifiers. Make sure you select speakers that allow you to change the volume level independently of the rest of your equipment.
Connectivity
Most speakers nowadays support multiple connections including USB ports, line outputs, optical inputs, etc. This allows you to hook up several different types of media players and portable storage devices. Check if the speaker supports these options and if possible, see if it has a dedicated input port for connecting a CD player or turntable.
Portability
Speakers are generally designed to sit on top of your monitor. So if you intend to take your speakers along with you, you should look for models that fold flat for easy transport. Many speakers now incorporate wheels making transportation easier.
Durability
Finally, durability is another consideration when picking speakers. While most speakers last longer than expected, you still need to pay attention to the materials used. Avoid cheap plastic speakers as they are prone to breakage. Instead, opt for durable metal or leather designs.
In conclusion, speakers play a crucial role in enhancing the overall experience of enjoying digital content. With the above mentioned factors in mind, you can shop around for the perfect speakers for your needs.
