Buyer's Guide

How to choose the  best air purifier

What is the Purpose of An Air  Purifier?

An air purifier is designed to remove  contaminants from indoor air. Indoor air contains many pollutants including  dust mites, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, viruses, volatile organic  compounds (VOC), formaldehyde, radon gas, carbon monoxide, tobacco smoke, and  allergens. Allergens include pet dander, house dust, cockroach droppings,  animal hair, feathers, and food particles. Pollutants found in indoor air  include VOCs, which contribute to asthma attacks; particulate matter, which  causes respiratory problems; and gaseous pollutants, which can be  toxic.

Purify Your Home Environment

Air  purifiers are available in two forms: whole room systems and portable units.  Whole room systems filter both incoming and outgoing air while portable units  filter only the air inside your home. Both types of air purifiers are  effective at removing airborne contaminants. However, whole room systems are  typically more efficient than portable units. Portable units require frequent  maintenance and replacement filters.

Reduce Asthma  Attacks

Asthma sufferers who live in homes with high  levels of pollution experience increased symptoms. Studies show that children  living in homes with higher concentrations of pollutants suffer from more  severe asthma attacks. Children exposed to higher amounts of pollutants are  more likely to develop allergies and asthma later in life.

Improve Health

Indoor air quality has  been linked to numerous health conditions including sinus infections,  headaches, fatigue, depression, and chronic coughs. Some studies suggest that  poor indoor air quality contributes to premature death. According to the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke  increases the risk of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Other harmful substances  found indoors include formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, asbestos, pesticides,  and heavy metals.

Healthy Living

The  American Lung Association recommends installing central heating ventilation  and air conditioning (HVAC) systems equipped with HEPA filtration. HVAC  systems with HEPA filters reduce the amount of fine particulates in the air.  Fine particulates are small enough to enter deep into the lungs where they  can trigger inflammation and infection. HEPA filters trap 99 percent of these  particles.

Save Money

Air purification  systems are essential tools for anyone who wants to breathe fresh air.  However, there are many different types of air purifying devices available  today. Some of these products are designed to remove dust particles while  others are meant to eliminate odors. There are also units that filter both  particulate matter and gases.

How Do We Know Which Type  Of Unit To Purchase?

There are two main categories of air  purifiers: whole house and portable. Whole house units are typically  installed inside your home and are connected to ductwork. Portable units are  small enough to be carried around the house and placed near where you spend  most of your time. Both types of units are effective at removing pollutants  from the air.

Whole House Units Are More Effective Than  Portables

Whole house units are generally more efficient  than portables. While both types of units can effectively remove airborne  contaminants, whole house units are able to capture larger amounts of dirt  and allergens. For example, whole house units can remove 99% of mold spores  from the air.

Portable Units Can Be Used Independently

While  whole house units are very effective, they require installation and  maintenance. Therefore, portable units are ideal for those who travel  frequently or live in smaller spaces. Portable units are easy to install and  operate independently. Most models include filters which allow users to  change them whenever necessary.

Which One Is Best For  Me?

Both whole house and portable units are suitable for  homes and offices. However, whole house units are recommended for large rooms  since they are capable of capturing larger quantities of contaminants.  Portable units are preferred for smaller areas due to their ease of  operation.

Consider Allergies Before Buying An Air Purifier

Before  making a decision regarding which type of unit to purchase, take into  consideration your allergies. Certain chemicals found in certain types of air  purifiers can trigger allergic reactions. Make sure that the product you select  does not contain any of these substances.

If you currently  own a whole house unit, it may be time to upgrade. Many manufacturers now  produce high efficiency models that are comparable to whole house units.  Additionally

Features To Look For When Buying An Air  Purifier

Air purifiers are designed to remove contaminants  from the air we breathe. There are many different types available today  ranging from small portable units to large room sized models. Some are  designed to be placed near a window while others are meant to cover entire  rooms. All air purifiers require electricity to operate and most include  filters which must be replaced periodically.

Portable  Units

These smaller devices are ideal for those who travel  frequently or live in apartments where there isn't enough ventilation.  Portable units are easy to transport and set up anywhere. Most of these units  run on batteries and are very quiet. However, they aren't effective at  removing airborne particles larger than 0.5 microns (0.005mm).

Room Size Models

Large room size  models are perfect for homes with multiple bedrooms or offices. These units  typically contain HEPA filtres which trap 99% of particulate matter greater  than 0.1 micron. While these units are quite noisy, they are capable of  filtering the air throughout a whole house.

Filters

All air purifiers require periodic  replacement of filters. Filters are generally located inside the unit itself  and are changed using special tools. Many manufacturers recommend changing  the filter once per month.

Power  Requirements

Most air purifiers require 110V AC power  supply. Make sure you check the specifications carefully before purchasing.

Installation

Some air purifiers are  self contained and plug into outlets directly. Others require installation in  wall sockets. Check the instructions included with the product for details.

Cost

The price of an air purifier  depends upon its size, features, and brand. Generally speaking, the higher  end units are pricier than lower quality ones.

Durability

Air purifiers are fairly  durable products. However, they are prone to breakage if dropped or  mishandled. Always handle them gently and avoid dropping them on hard floors.

Maintenance

Most air purifiers require  little maintenance. Simply change the filters regularly and ensure the fan  blades spin freely.

An air purifier is a useful tool for  improving indoor air quality. Before making a decision, however, take into  consideration the type of air pollution

Air purification  systems are designed to remove contaminants from the air we breathe. There  are many different kinds of air purifiers available today. Some are portable  while others are stationary units. Each type has its own advantages and  disadvantages. Here are some of the most popular models currently being  sold.

Portable Air Purifiers

These  devices are small enough to be carried around the house. Portable air  purifiers are ideal for removing dust particles and allergens from the air.  Most of these products include HEPA filters which trap 99% of airborne  pollutants including pollen, pet hair, smoke, mold spores, bacteria, viruses,  and mites.

Whole House Air  Purifiers

This kind of unit uses ionizers to create  negative ions in the room. Negative ions attract positive ions in the  surrounding air making it easier for us to breath. Whole house air purifiers  are perfect for homes where there are pets or smokers living in the same  household. Ionizing technology removes odors and reduces the amount of germs  in the air.

Central Air Conditioners

The  central air conditioner is probably the oldest form of air conditioning.  Central air conditioners cool the entire house using refrigerant gas.  Refrigerants absorb heat from the air passing through the coils inside the  machine. As the air passes through the coil, it picks up the coldness from  the refrigerant causing the air to become cooler.

Heat  Pump Air Conditioners

Heat pump air conditioners are very  efficient. Heat pumps transfer heat from outside air into the interior of the  home. This process causes the air to become warmer. Then, the warm air is  pushed throughout the house via ductwork. Ducted heating systems are  typically found in large houses. However, smaller homes can benefit from heat  pumps too.

Evaporative Coolers

An  evaporative cooling system consists of two parts; a water reservoir and a  fan. Water flows through the reservoir and absorbs moisture from the air.  Moisture is then blown across the floor creating a mist. The mist is cooled  by evaporation and becomes dry air. Evaporative cooling systems are  inexpensive and easy to install. However, they require regular maintenance to  ensure proper operation.

Hybrid Systems

Hybrid  systems combine both electric fans and
