Different Types of Acme Comics

Acme comics are a type of comic strip which was created by cartoonist Al Capp. He began his career working for newspapers in New York City before moving to California where he worked for United Features Syndicate. His characters included Joe Shmo, Mr. Natural, and Li'l Abner. Although he's considered one of America's greatest humorists, he never achieved fame during his lifetime. Instead, it took decades for him to become recognized as a legend.

The History Of Acme Comics

At the time, he was employed by King Features Syndicate. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and drew cartoons for servicemen stationed overseas. After the war ended, he returned to civilian life and continued to draw for syndicates. UFS published several strips written by Capp including "Li'l Abner" and "Joe Shmo".

Capp's Characters

In 1950, Capp introduced two new characters named Biff Hooper and Beetle Bailey. Both men appeared in newspaper panels and later became recurring characters in the series. Other characters included Sally Forth, Daffy Duck, and Elmer Fudd. All of these characters were based on famous celebrities. For instance, Joe Shmo was modeled after actor Jimmy Stewart.

The Acme Comic Strip

By 1952, Capp decided to create a daily comic strip called "Li'l Abner." The title character was based on a fictional hillbilly named Eugene Humbert Snopes. The strip featured Snopes' adventures living in the town of Dogpatch. Each day, readers received a single panel featuring Snopes interacting with various citizens of Dogpatch.

Other Acme Comic Strips

After creating "Li'l Abner", Capp developed another comic strip titled "Bozo." Bozo ran for four years and focused on the antics of a simpleton named Bobo Brinkerhoff. Like "Li'l Abner, " each page contained only one panel. Unlike "Li'l Abner, " however, "Bozo" was serialized. That meant that each week, readers saw a complete story arc.

Acme Comics Today

Today, Capp's legacy lives on thanks to the popularity of webcomics. Webcomics are short stories posted online. Readers view them via computers connected to the Internet. Because of its ease of access, webcomics have gained tremendous popularity among young audiences. In fact, today, webcomics account for nearly half of all American graphic novels sold.
