Buyer's Guide

How to choose the best S-Video Cable

What are S-Video Cable?

A cable for connecting S-video device to TV sets and monitors

How Does S-Video Work?

S-video uses two cables: One connects the video source (such as DVD player) to the television set; the other goes between the video source and the display device such as computer monitor or projector.

Types of S-Video Cables

There are three types of S-video cables:

  • RCA Video Cable: The red connector at each end is RCA plug. Connect the red connectors together and attach them to the TV's composite input jack.
  • AVC/HDMI Audio Cable: The black connector at each end is AVC/HDMI audio plug. Attach the black connectors together and connect them to the sound card or speaker connected to the HDMI port on the TV.
  • Mini DisplayPort Cable: The blue connector at each end is Mini DisplayPort. Connect the blue connectors together and attach them to the computer's mini DisplayPort socket.

The Importance of A Purchasing a Quality S-Video Cable

There's nothing worse than watching TV on a computer screen because of its poor picture quality. That's why we've decided to talk about how important it is to buy a good quality s-video cable. Read on!

How Does Your Computer Screen Look?

If you're looking at your television set right now, you might notice something odd: There's no sound coming out of your speakers. Instead, there's a black box sitting on top of your TV. And if you look closer, you'll see that the screen is very blurry and dark. These problems are caused by the fact that your computer has bad connection between the VGA port and the audio/video ports.

What Causes This Connection Problem?

To make sure everything works properly, you must first determine whether the problem lies within your computer or within your cables. To do so, try plugging in your computer into different ports on your TV (or vice versa). If you still cannot get a clear picture, you may want to purchase a better quality s-video cable.

S-Video Cables vs RCA Cables

When choosing an s-video cable, you'll also need to consider whether you want an analog or digital signal. Analog signals are transmitted using only electrical current; while digital signals use light waves instead. Both types of signals can transmit information, but they do so differently. For example, a digital signal transmits data over a specific frequency range, whereas an analog signal uses frequencies above and below that range.

Is the Signal Transmitting Correctly?

As mentioned earlier, if your computer doesn't connect correctly to your TV, chances are it's either transmitting incorrectly or receiving the wrong signal. Try connecting your computer directly to your TV, and if you still don't receive a clear picture, check your settings again.

Features To Consider Before Buying S-Video Cable

S-video cable is a popular connection type used to connect HDTVs to computers. But before you buy, make sure you know exactly how it works and what features matter to you.

What Does S-Video Do?

Most TVs today use composite cables to send audio signals over HDMI ports. The composite signal is split into red, green, and blue (RGB) components, each carrying its own data channel. A separate S-video port sends the left and right stereo channels along with sync pulses, allowing the computer to synchronize sound playback to the picture. These two signals travel together inside the same cable, making them difficult to distinguish at times.

How Does S-Video Work?

To understand how S-video works, think about how the component video inputs on a TV look. Each input carries three color information streams: Red, Green, Blue. When the video signal reaches the television set, the incoming colors are mixed together to produce white light. For example, if the video signal contains a single red pixel, the TV mixes all three colors to produce yellow light. Similarly, if the video signal has a single green pixel, the TV produces cyan light. And so on.

Why Should I Use S-Video?

S-video offers several advantages over composite connections. First, S-video uses less bandwidth than composite video, allowing you to transmit higher quality images. Second, S-video doesn't rely on analog signals; instead, it transmits digital RGB signals using standard DVI connectors. Finally, because there's only one wire running between the source device and the display, S-video cables are cheaper than composite cables.

Popular S-Video Cablebrands

Cable companies make great partners because they provide a variety of services at affordable prices. But choosing the right cable company can be tricky. Here's our list of popular s-video cables, plus where to buy them.

Sony HDTVS-LH500/600

This Sony s-video cable has been available since 2004, but its popularity continues to grow. Its 50' length makes it ideal for long runs between TVs and VCRs, while the low price tag keeps costs down.

Comcast CSCM-2050

This Comcast s-video cable is a perfect match for standard definition televisions (SDT). At only $15, it's one of the best deals out there.

LG SDG-2000

LG's version of the standard s-video connector was first introduced in 2001. While it doesn't offer quite the same versatility as the Sony model, it still provides reliable performance and excellent value.

Panasonic AVCY-1810

With its 18" jack, this Panasonic cable offers great flexibility for connecting devices such as game consoles, DVD players, computers, and more. And unlike other cables, it features a dual plug design, so you don't have to worry about getting two different plugs mixed up.

JVC KRCV-1660

This 16" cable comes with everything you'd expect from a premium brand, including sturdy construction, a built-in remote control, and 100 feet of range.

Thomson TCSA-1201

A smaller option than the LG model, this Thomson cable is also worth considering if you're looking for something inexpensive.

Frequently Asked Questions About S-Video Cable

This post answers many frequently asked questions about s-video cables.

What's an s-video cable?

S-video (or composite) is a standard used in VCRs to connect TVs to computers. The connector looks similar to the RCA jack, but has two wires instead of three. These two extra wires carry color information.

How do I know if my TV supports s-video?

Most modern TVs support s-video, so there's no reason to worry unless you're using a vintage model. Some older models might only use component video instead of s-video, though.

Can I use s-video cables to hook up multiple monitors?

Yes! Many people use them to connect multiple TVs together, or even a computer screen and projector. But note that they won't display all colors correctly; only the primary colors red, green, and blue will show up properly.

Is s-video compatible with HDMI?

No. That's why we don't see them very often anymore. Most TVs now use HDMI connections exclusively.
