Buyer's Guide

How to choose the best Power Cables

What are Power Cables?

There are many types of power cables used in homes today. Some people may wonder if they even need them at all. There are three main categories of cable: regular, extension, and grounding. Understanding each type of cable will help you decide whether or not you need to purchase one.

Regular Cable

This type of cable is typically found inside walls and under floors. The wire itself is color coded so that you know exactly where it goes. Most residential electrical wiring uses red wires, but there are other colors available depending on how far away from ground you want to be.

Extension Cable

If you're looking to run extra power down the hallway or across a room, you'll need an extension cord. These cords come in various lengths and colors. They also often include built-in surge protectors.

Grounding Cable

Grounding cables provide a direct path between the negative side of the circuit breaker box and earth ground. Without a grounding cable, electricity could flow back into the house instead of out of it. Grounding cables are generally yellow or green and sometimes have two conductive ends. One end connects to the circuit breaker box while the other touches the metal rod attached to the foundation.

The Importance of A Purchasing a Quality Power Cables

Purchasing power cables can make or break your audio/video equipment. Here's why: Most modern electronics requires a certain amount of current to operate properly. Without proper power, those electronic components won't perform at peak levels. For example, if your DVD player has a USB port, but the cable connecting it to your computer isn't up to snuff, you'll get poor performance out of the device.

Power Issues: 1) Low Voltage

A low voltage is caused by improper wiring between devices, damaged connectors, or other faulty connections. When you're dealing with power issues, the first thing to check is whether the source of the problem is coming from the wall socket itself or elsewhere (e.g., the outlet behind the TV).

Power Issues: 2) Overload

If there's too much load being placed on the circuit, the voltage may drop significantly, causing all sorts of problems ranging from minor inconveniences to complete failure. Check your outlets, plugs, and extension cords carefully; you don't want to plug something into a dead spot.

Power Issues: 3) Too Much Load

Even though we typically think about amps and watts when talking about electrical loads, they only tell part of the story. What matters even more than how many watts a component draws is how long it takes to draw them. In other words, what really matters is the "current" flowing through the wire. If a device pulls 10 amps over a 20 amp circuit, it's drawing 100% more current than a device pulling 5 amps over a 40 amp circuit. That means the device using more current is consuming more energy and taking longer to run.

What About AC?

While most people focus on DC power, electricity flows both ways. There's also alternating current (AC), which comes in two varieties: 120V and 240V. Some older appliances use 60Hz AC, while newer models generally prefer 50Hz AC. However, neither is inherently better than the other. Your TV might look great with 60Hz, but it doesn't mean that its performance would suffer if you used 50Hz

Features To Consider Before Buying Power Cables

If you're planning to purchase power cables, here's a quick checklist to make sure you get the right product for your needs.

What Type Of Cable Do You Need?

Cable types include: Ethernet cable, CAT5e/6A, USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, Thunderbolt, HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, SVideo, VGA, RCA audio, SCART, Composite Video, Component Video, YPbPr (YPBPR), RGB (RGB), HDCP, SPDIF, Audio Return Channel (ARC) and Serial.

How Much Amperage Will Your Project Require?

Amperage refers to how many amps flow through the wire at any given moment. For example, if you plug in a 15 amp circuit breaker into a 20 amp outlet, there won't be enough current flowing to operate all of the devices plugged into the outlet. The same goes for electrical outlets; they also come in different amperages.

Do You Have Any Other Electrical Needs?

Consider whether you'll need other electrical equipment such as surge protectors, switches, dimmers, receptacles, lighting fixtures, or even wall plates.
